Vedic Astrology

Vedic astrology, also known as Jyotisha, is a traditional Hindu system of astrology based on the Vedas that focuses on the influence of celestial bodies on human lives and events. It is an ancient system that uses a sidereal zodiac, which takes the Earth’s precession into account, differing from Western astrology’s tropical zodiac. Key aspects include the importance of the Moon sign (Rashi) for understanding personality, and the belief that it provides insight into karma, dharma, and life path.

Key aspects of Vedic astrology

  • Ancient origins: It is one of the six auxiliary disciplines of the Vedas, or "knowledge," and has been practiced for centuries.
  • Jyotisha: The term "Jyotisha" means "the light of God" and is considered the "eye of the Vedas," providing a way to understand one's personality, past, present, and future.
  • Sidereal zodiac: Unlike Western astrology, which uses a symbolic tropical zodiac, Vedic astrology uses a sidereal zodiac that accounts for the precession of the equinoxes, making it astronomically more accurate.
  • Moon sign (Rashi): Vedic astrology places significant importance on the Moon sign, or Rashi, which is determined by the constellation the Moon was in at the moment of birth.
  • Karma and dharma: It is deeply rooted in the concepts of karma and dharma, helping to provide insight into a person's life path, or purpose, as well as their innate gifts and challenges.
  • Nakshatras: The system also uses a lunar mansion system with 27 Nakshatras, or constellations, which are used to provide more detailed analysis.
